The Problem

Project Background

Our client required a solution to integrate off the shelf model aircraft jet engines into a single control unit. There was a requirement to obtain engine status, temperatures and fuel usage that was to be displayed remotely.

The Solution

How we overcame the challenge

The primary part of this work was to determine and understand the key components in the data streams that could be requested from the engines. This work was undertaken with support from the manufacturer, however, due to limitations in the engine software both teams had to work together to identify and solve issues in the implementation.
The final solution was based on two processors. The first was an application processor that was able to communicate via a daisy chained serial link to the remote units. This data was decoded, and the status of the system determined and displayed on LEDs on the control board. The data stream was packed and passed to a WiFi co-processor. This could have a HUD or ground station PC attached to it so that the data stream could be monitored.
The UI for the HUD was written in Unity and ran on a DAQRI helmet. The display showed the status of all the engines that were in the system and estimated the fuel usage of each.
